Hexing Empty Hexing

Can someone explain to me exactly what a hexie is? I understand the concept of it, but is it a re-colour, new breed and can it be a hexie if it's made on Petz workshop. If so why does my new breed replace the old file? I tried giving it a new breed ID number, and a new name but it still replaces it, can anyone help?
